How Unplanned Decisions Can Change Your Direction

A couple deliberates on paint color selections

It is widely known that life can be pretty unpredictable. Yes, the reality is that most people have a certain image in their head of their education plans, career plans, relationship plans, etc.

But then life happens and completely alters the trajectory of your life. In some instances, the decisions you make occur quite spontaneously, in the spur of the moment. On the flip side, at times, specific decisions will literally be forced upon you.

In both cases, the decisions that you make can greatly impact your life and its course, and that’s something that we will further delve into today.

Plans Can Give You A Sense Of Direction, But Remember, They Aren’t Permanent!

Having a game plan is great. It gives you a roadmap and stops massive goals from feeling totally overwhelming. But things go sideways when you treat that plan like it’s completely set in stone.

Life happens. Priorities shift, you get new data, cool opportunities pop up, or you just realize that the goal you’ve been chasing isn’t even what you want anymore. One surprise twist can completely derail the route you thought you were taking.

Honestly, changing gears can feel super uncomfortable—especially when you’ve already poured a ton of time and energy into Plan A. But pivoting doesn’t mean your past effort was a total waste. You still get to keep all the experience, lessons, and growth you picked up along the way.

Are You Prone To Having Second Thoughts About Something?

Truth be told, every person sometimes has second thoughts about something. In these situations, you can consult a friend, a family member, or whoever, but that doesn’t mean they’ll help you out when it comes to this.

So, what can be done then? Those who are dealing with the so-called decision paralysis usually do a spin wheel because then they are leaving it all up to “fate” to decide what’s best for them. Even if you do not necessarily believe in its powers, it’s still a fun way to make up your mind about something.

Speaking of this, here’s a fact that will surprise you. Namely, your brain is actually a massive fan of these sorts of things because it loves anticipation, which means that each time you spin the wheel, it releases small amounts of dopamine while you are waiting to get your answer. How cute is that?

Small Decisions Aren’t That Small

Not every massive, life-altering choice comes with a dramatic drumroll. Sometimes, it’s the completely ordinary stuff—saying yes to a random party invite, throwing your hat in the ring for a job, striking up a conversation with a stranger, or trying a new route home.

These tiny moments can trigger a crazy domino effect that lands you somewhere you never could have guessed. When you really think about it, so many of our best friendships, relationships, and career breaks started with a totally boring, everyday choice.

The truth is, we almost never know which decisions are actually going to matter down the road. It’s impossible to predict where you’ll end up. Sure, you can guess the likely outcomes, but there’s always going to be a ton of wild cards you can’t control.

Sometimes, the smallest, most random choice opens up a massive door you didn’t even know was there.

Unexpected Opportunities May, In Fact, Be Fun!

Many people are scared of unplanned decisions, thinking that if they make them, something negative will most likely occur; however, that doesn’t necessarily need to be the case. What if you decide to say yes to a certain project, only to realize that it has been one of the most lucrative things you’ve ever been a part of?

Or if you suddenly decide to finally ask someone on a date and eventually you end up marrying that person. The point is that sometimes it’s advisable to say yes to something. It doesn’t instantly mean that only good things will happen (because there’s never a guarantee), but it surely means it’s worth a try!

Reckless Is Not The Same As Unplanned!

Let’s be real: there’s a massive difference between making a surprise pivot and just being totally reckless. Being open to going with the flow doesn’t mean you should leave your brain at the door.

Before you make a massive leap, it’s always worth running through a quick mental checklist. Think about the best-case scenario if you go for it versus what happens if you just stay put.

People rarely step out of their comfort zone because that’s where they feel safe. But safe isn’t always the best possible option. As you can see, at times, things that are unplanned turn out to be the best ones!
